The National Self-Government of Ukrainians in Hungary (OUNÖ) was first elected in 1999 and is the official body of the Ukrainian national minority in Hungary which status is recognized under the Hungarian Act on the Rights of National Minorities in Hungary.

The main mission and duty of the National Self-Government of Ukrainians in Hungary is to ensure the wide-ranging rights of the Ukrainian national minority of Hungary for the Ukrainians and the Ukrainian community.

The organisation mainly contributes to the development of offers in the fields of education, culture and religion for the Ukrainian minority in Hungary. It organises nearly fifty events a year for the Ukrainian community and the Hungarian interested parties: picture exhibitions and art events, concerts, Ukrainian film screenings, literary evenings and meetings, quizzes, holiday celebrations and conferences.

Organising events dedicated to the anniversaries of the war and other initiatives became important to inform and educate the Hungarian community about the situation in Ukraine and engage them in support. The biggest achievement of the past two years has been the establishment of a Ukrainian language school where 200 children can learn their native language, literature and culture, additionally to their current studies. And also establishment of 5 days the Taras Shevchenko Bilingual Ukrainian Ethnic School, where children can learn both Ukrainian and Hungarian languages and culture.

The National Self-Government of Ukrainians in Hungary (OUNÖ) is a member of FUEN since 2025.
