The Croatian Centre/Hrvatski centar was founded in 1994 as an umbrella organisation of the two Croatian associations existing in Vienna - Hrvatsko gradišćansko kulturno društvo u Beču / Burgenland Croatian Cultural Association - Vienna (since 1934) and Hrvatski akademski klub / Croatian Academic Club (since 1948).

It is thus the cultural, social and societal centre of the Croats in Vienna and is committed to diversity and tolerance, cultural exchange and multilingualism, human and minority rights. A major concern is the preservation, maintenance and further development of the Croatian language and culture as well as the strengthening of identity as an ethnic group in its entirety, but especially in the big city.

The Croatian Centre/Hrvatski centar thus actively contributes to the cultural diversity of the Danube metropolis Vienna and acts as a connecting element for the neighbouring countries Austria, Croatia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary. The wide range of offers and the manifold activities and fields of activity of the Croatian Centre/Hrvatski centar encompass numerous areas of life, which should enable the preservation and the linguistic and cultural development of the ethnic group in Vienna, as part of the entire ethnic group. Of essential importance is the bridging from village to city and the urbanization of traditional, old and new.

It is important to find and promote current and contemporary cultural forms of expression. One of the main concerns of the Croatian Centre/Hrvatski centar is the legal protection of the ethnic group (especially in Vienna) in the sense of a contemporary protection of minorities (detached from the territorial principle) on a European standard as well as the creation of adequate educational opportunities (educational language Croatian from kindergarten to school leaving examination) in Vienna.

The Croatian Centre/Hrvatski centar sees itself as a platform for joint activities and initiatives of both autochthonous and allochthonous minorities and ethnic groups in Vienna and Austria, respectively, in the sense of strengthening intercultural cooperation. A major focus is also on the entire Croatian community in Vienna, which includes the ethnic group of the Burgenland Croats in Vienna as well as the migrants who have immigrated in recent decades (Croats from Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina).

The services offered by the Hrvatski centar/Croatian Centre are aimed at all age groups and social classes that support these common goals, regardless of their religious, political and socio-political orientations. The Croatian Centre/Hrvatski centar is a FUEN member since 2012.
