FUEN submitted statements to the 34th Human Rights Council
03.03.2017This week the 34th session of the Human Rights Council has started in Geneva. During the session, which lasts four weeks in total, many different human rights-related topics are discussed among the member states of the UN.
FUEN has submitted two statements. Under the agenda item 3 - Promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development – it asks attention for the advisability of re-opening of Turkish schools on the islands of Rhodes and Kos and calls on Greece to respect the education rights of its citizens who belong to the Turkish minority on these islands.
Under agenda item 9 - Racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms of intolerance, which will be debated on 20 March – FUEN expresses its deep concern about the increasing trend in hate speech and crimes against persons belonging to the Turkish minority of Western Thrace. The political bias and hatred against members of Turkish minority has created an environment of pressure and intimidation in the region.
The Human Rights Council is the inter-governmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and make recommendations on them.
