Fondazione “Agostina Piccoli” was founded in 1999, and was officially recognized in 2002 by Italy as an institution for preservation and protection of the Molise Croat culture and tradition. The aim of Fondazione “Agostina Piccoli” is to safeguard and protect the Molise Croatian minority. The main activities include the promotion and dissemination of the Molise-Croatian minority in Europe, through conferences, publications and exhibitions. Fondazione “Agostina Piccoli” has established the Fondacione Piccoli Prize, awarded for achievements in culture and the arts related to the language, traditions and the history of the Croatian community of the Molise region in Italy. The foundation also has a documentation and research centre, offers standard Croatian language courses and publishes a cultural magazine in Croat and Italian, Rica Ziva/Parola Viva. Fondazione “Agostina Piccoli” is a member of FUEN since 2018.

The origins of the Croatian minority in the Italian region of Molise go back to the flight of the Croats from the conquerors of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th and 16th centuries. Croatian settlements in Italy were established along the entire Adriatic coast from Marche to Puglia. In the mostly hardly inhabited areas and villages the Croats were very welcome. Today, however, the residential area of the Croatian minority is limited to the small region of Molise. The approximately 2,200 members of the Croatian minority live scattered in the villages of Montemitro, Acquaviva Collecroce, San Felice del Molise and Tavenna.
