We mourn the loss of Dr Ondrej Pöss
24.04.2026It is with great dismay and deep sorrow that we bid farewell to our long-standing companion Dr Ondrej Pöss, who passed away on 20 April. As a scholar and minority rights activist, he was a defining figure in the Carpathian German community in Slovakia for decades. His death is a bitter loss for the Carpathian Germans and for the entire European minority community.
As the long-standing chairman of the Carpathian German Association in Slovakia and as the founder of the Museum of Carpathian German Culture, Dr Pöss bore a great deal of responsibility over the years. Preserving and showcasing Carpathian German culture was of great importance to him. In his dealings with others, he was warm and humorous, and remained calm even when things became difficult. Many of us also knew him as a regular guest at FUEN congresses and AGDM annual conferences.
Dr Ondrej Pöss was born on 7 November 1950 in Krickerhau (Handlová). He studied mathematics and physics at Comenius University in Bratislava and later worked at the Historical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, where, among other things, he headed a department.
From 1994, he was commissioned by the Slovak National Museum to establish the Museum of Carpathian German Culture. He began alone, without premises or a collection. In 1997, the museum was officially opened and he was appointed director. He led the institution until 2021. During this time, the museum organised exhibitions throughout Slovakia as well as in Germany, Austria and Hungary. In 2011, an exhibition from the museum was on display at the German Bundestag. The museum comprises a specialised library, the publication series ‘Acta Carpatho-Germanica’, and an extensive collection on the history and culture of the Carpathian Germans.
Dr Pöss also remained a key figure in the Carpathian German Association for many years. He had been involved there since the early 1990s, co-founded a local branch in his home region in 1991, and was regularly elected to the regional executive from 1994 onwards. From 2003 to 2008, he served as the association’s chairman and took up the post again in 2013. He held this office until March 2026. Thereafter, he remained closely associated with the Carpathian German Association as honorary chairman.
Many also knew him as an author: he published academic papers and books on the Carpathian Germans and, from 1992, wrote hundreds of articles for the Karpatenblatt.
For his work, Dr Pöss received several awards, including the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon (2012, awarded by Federal President Joachim Gauck), the Golden Medal of Honour of the Republic of Austria (2014) and the Gold Medal of the Slovak Republic (2020).
Dr Pöss had been married to the lawyer Katarína Pössová since 1976, and the couple had lived in Bratislava since 1982.
With the passing of Dr Ondrej Pöss, we have lost a man who has supported and shaped Carpathian German cultural and remembrance work for decades. Our thoughts are with his wife and all his loved ones during this difficult time.
Dear Ondrej, we will miss you greatly and will always honour your memory. Rest in peace.
