Women of Minorities: Anikó Orsós – the Roma who never gave up

"It wasn’t easy. You always need connections and someone who believes in you. The truth is, if you are born Roma, you have to prove yourself repeatedly – whether at university or in the workplace."

These words from Anikó Orsós reflect the determination and resilience that have shaped her journey. She grew up in a Roma settlement in Hungary, in extreme poverty, alongside seven siblings. At a young age, she became a mother of two – the societal barriers seemed insurmountable. But she refused to be discouraged.

Anikó went back to school, completed her education, and later pursued a university degree. Today, she is, among other roles, a Women’s Rights Officer at the European Roma Rights Center, based in Budapest, Hungary, advocating for the rights of Roma women. As a recognized expert, she raises awareness of the challenges Roma women face in Hungary and across Europe.

In our latest video for the "Women of Minorities" project, Anikó shares her story. She speaks about prejudice, setbacks, and her commitment to building a better future. She also highlights the complex layers of discrimination that minorities continue to face.

Despite all challenges, Anikó remains optimistic: "I am delighted to see more strong Roma women reaching positions of influence." Her message to young Roma women and anyone struggling with similar difficulties is clear: "Never give up. It is important to fight for the goals you want to achieve and to seek out people who can help. Because, as difficult as society may be, there are always people who will extend a helping hand."

 

Background: The "Women of Minorities" project

The "Women of Minorities" project is an initiative of the FUEN and aims to strengthen the representation and rights of women in minority communities across Europe.

A survey among FUEN member organisations revealed that although women are represented in the organisations, leadership positions are predominantly held by men. While many organisations are aware of the principles of gender equality, there is often a lack of official guidelines and training. Obstacles such as lack of promotion, lack of awareness and stereotypes within the organisations hinder equality.

In 2023 and 2024, FUEN organised events in Vienna (Austria) and Athens (Greece) on this topic, which attracted wide interest.
