Increased attention for minority languages and linguistic minorities in the European Parliament
03.03.2017This week a new report was issued on minority languages and education, commissioned by the research department of the European Parliament and written by the Mercator European Research Centre, a partner organisation of FUEN,
The report on minority languages and education delivers an in-depth comparative analysis of thirteen language case studies in order to gain insight into the situation of minority languages in education in Europe. Indications for best practices are described and challenges that minority languages face in education are highlighted. Specific attention is directed to vocational education and career perspectives. The report gives recommendations how the EU can support minority languages in education.
Another positive development for the European minorities is the fact that the newly elected president of the European Parliament, Mr Antonio Tajani, appointed an advisor tasked with linguistic minorities in the EU. Dr Markus Warasin is from South Tyrol and previously held positions in the European Parliament and with the European Bureau for Lesser Used Languages. FUEN looks forward to work together with him to improve the situation of the European minorities and their languages.
