The extended and rebuilt German Museum Nordschleswig is now open

One of the most important cultural institutions of the German minority has reopened: on 8 August, the Deutsches Museum Nordschleswig in Sønderborg opened its doors after an extension and rebuilding that has been going on for almost a year.

Danish Minister of Culture Joy Mogensen, of Detlev Rünger, Germany's ambassador to Denmark, Prof.Dr. Bernd Fabritius, the minority commissioner of the German federal government, Karin Prien (CDU), Minister of Education, Science and Culture in Schleswig-Holstein, and Erik Lauritzen, Mayor of Sønderborg Municipality took part in the official inauguration.

Hinrich Jürgensen, Chairman of the Bund Deutscher Nordschleswiger (BDN), which is in charge of the museum, said in a speech at the inauguration that they wanted not only to build new premises for the existing exhibition, but also to tell the basic story of the German minority, the border region and other minorities in a modern and appealing way in terms of form and content.

The museum was scheduled to be officially inaugurated on July 11 with the participation of Queen Margrethe and German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, but due to the corona pandemic, the opening was postponed for a month, while the visit with the two heads of state was moved to 2021.

The new construction has cost 30 million korona. Both the Danish and the German state have contributed financially to the project, which also has the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Sønderborg Municipality and a number of foundations among contributors.
