Experts meet to develop detailed law proposals based on the Minority SafePack Initiative

The first Expert Meeting of the Minority SafePack Initiative took place in Brussels on Wednesday, 10 October 2018. Eighteen experts from different European states with diverse areas of activity and professional background took part in the meeting to discuss the next steps and to form the working groups in order to develop detailed law proposals based on the nine points included in the succesful European Citizens’ Initiative. The Expert Meeting was held at FUEN’s Europe Office in Brussels.

“The Expert Meeting is another important step in achieving our ultimate goal: to have a legal framework for the protection of autochthonous minorities in the European Union. Skilled professionals from Germany, South Tyrol, Hungary, Slovakia, Latvia, Romania  are working together on a series of documents and law proposals on how to put our demands in practice. Other experts will also join and support their work. This is further proof that the Minority SafePack Initiative is in good hands, we have a strategy to maximize the signatures of the citizens” – said FUEN President Vincze Loránt.

The FUEN and the Citizens’ Committee plans to present the law proposals to the European Commission alongside the 1,128,385 validated signatures for the Minority SafePack Initiative.

The Minority SafePack Initiative is a European Citizens’ Initiative which calls upon the EU for legislative support and protection of persons belonging to national and linguistic minorities and to strengthen the cultural and linguistic diversity of Europe. It includes policy actions in the areas of regional and minority languages, education and culture, regional policy, equality, audiovisual and other media content as well as regional (state) support. During a succesful campaign coordinated by the FUEN it managed to collect 1,128,385 validated statements of support from European citizens while also passing the given national threshold in 11 Member States of the European Union.
