FUEN mourns the passing of Traian Cresta, a leading figure of the Romanian community in Hungary

The Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) expresses its deep sadness at the passing of Traian Cresta (1947–2025), a distinguished leader and advocate of the Romanian community in Hungary.

Born in Battonya, Traian Cresta dedicated his life to serving the Romanian minority, promoting education, culture, and the preservation of national identity. Over the decades, he played a decisive role in strengthening community institutions and ensuring the visibility of the Romanian minority within Hungary’s public life.

He served as President of the Self-Government of Romanians in Hungary (1999–2014), Deputy Mayor of Battonya (2002–2014), and, from 2014 until his passing, as the spokesperson of the Romanian community in the Parliament of Hungary.

His outstanding contributions were recognised with several distinctions, including “For the Romanians in Hungary” (2015), the Békés County Award for Nationalities (2017), and the title of Honorary Citizen of Battonya (2018).

FUEN conveys its heartfelt condolences to his family, the Romanian community in Hungary and to FUEN’s member organisation, the Self-Government of Romanians in Hungary.
Traian Cresta’s work and dedication will remain an enduring part of the history and identity of his community.
