Save the Date: Forum of European Minority Regions 2026
19.08.2026Artificial intelligence is changing the way languages are used, learned and represented in the digital world. For regional and minority languages, this creates new opportunities, but also new risks, especially when smaller languages are underrepresented in the data used to train AI systems.
These questions will be at the centre of the Forum of European Minority Regions 2026, taking place on 23 and 24 October 2026 in Chur/Cuira/Coira, Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, under the theme “Minorities and Artificial Intelligence – Risks and Promises”.
The main conference will take place on 23 October in the Grand Council Hall of the Canton of Graubünden. The Forum is organised by FUEN together with its member organisations Lia Rumantscha and Pro Grigioni Italiano, representing the Romansh- and Italian-speaking communities of Graubünden and serving as the local hosts.
The programme will look at how AI can support regional and minority languages, what role major technology companies play, and how regions and language communities across Europe are already using new technologies. Contributions from the European Commission, UNESCO, academia, technology companies and minority communities will bring together different perspectives on the opportunities and challenges involved.
This year’s Forum will also have a stronger practical focus. During an extended lunch break, participants will be able to explore and try out several AI-related language projects presented during the conference.
On 24 October, the programme continues with digidi 2026, a day dedicated to digitalisation and artificial intelligence of the Romansh community in Graubünden.
