The Romanian Government sues the European Commission for registering the Minority SafePack citizen’s initiative – this will not make us stop gathering the necessary signatures

According to the Official Journal of the European Union the Romanian Government appealed to the European Court of Justice to annul the European Commission’s decision to register the Minority SafePack Citizen’s Initiative. FUEN President Loránt Vincze, and Bálint Porcsalmi, Executive President of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) held a joint press conference in Transylvania today to address this new turn of events.

FUEN President Vincze Loránt identifies Romania’s plea a step towards international self-isolation, as it goes against the will of 50 million European citizens belonging to national minorities and linguistic communities and against several Member States that are supporting their action.

Vincze stressed: “The Minority SafePack Initiative strengthens common European values. It does not take anything away from majority communities. Now, more than ever, we need to show solidarity and determination. We need to show Europe that 50 million of its citizens matter. Every European citizen who believes in a truly diverse and multicultural Europe, with equal rights for all its citizens, needs to sign the Minority SafePack initiative. We need guarantees from the European Union to make sure, that minority rights can no longer be curtailed.”

Bálint Porcsalmi stated: “By this action the Romanian Government goes against the cultural and linguistic diversity of Europe.” The executive of the Hungarian minority protection organisation in Romania pointed out that this action is in line with the previous acts of the Romanian politicians aginst the legitimate requests of the Hungarian community in Romania.

“This legal action will not stop us and it does not intimidate us in any way. We will gather the one million signatures!” – stated the leaders of the FUEN and the RMDSZ.
