Minority Monitor: The Crimean Tatars and FUEN’s Commitment to Protecting Minority Rights

The latest contribution to Minority Monitor highlights the plight of the Crimean Tatars, one of Europe’s most persecuted indigenous peoples, and FUEN’s longstanding commitment to defending their rights.

For more than a decade, FUEN has stood side by side with the Crimean Tatars, adopting a series of resolutions (2013–2024) that call for the recognition of their status as an indigenous people, the restoration of their representative institutions such as the Mejlis, and the protection of their cultural, linguistic, and religious rights.

This new article examines both the historical injustices faced by the Crimean Tatars—from Stalin’s mass deportations in 1944 to the systemic repression under Russia’s illegal occupation of Crimea—and the ongoing struggle for recognition and justice in today’s geopolitical context. It also outlines concrete steps that Ukraine, European institutions, and the wider international community must take to ensure that the rights of the Crimean Tatars are fully protected.
