The petition campaign for the Minority SafePack Initiative has been officially launched in Maros county, Transylvania

„People in this city, this region know exactly what can happen if a state is not open to hearing about the issues of minorities living on its territory. They know why the Minority SafePack Initiative is important, why we ask to be treated equally and why we ask Europe to guarantee minority rights. Hungarians in Romania are pioneers of the petition campaign for the initiative”, stated FUEN President Vincze Loránt on Thursday in his hometown Marosvásárhely, during a press conference jointly held with Péter Ferenc, the President of the county level organization of the RMDSZ to mark the official launch of the local petition campaign for the Minority SafePack European Citizen’s Initiative.

Romania seizes every opportunity to express its disagreement with the Initiative, and it sued the European Commission for registering the MSPI. The update in the story is that the Slovakian government decided to join the lawsuit on the side of the plaintiff – said Vincze Loránt adding that in his view the decision of the Slovakian government is not an unexpected one, and that this attitude shows that minority rights are far from being guaranteed in these countries. The FUEN President stressed that the lawsuit will not affect the petition campaign.

The president of the county level organization of the RMDSZ, the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania, Péter Ferenc stated: they aim to seek out over 25 thousand households to present the Minority SafePack Initiative, and gather at least 40 thousand signatures for this petition, and that 37 mayors, 53 deputy mayors, about 500 members of local councils from within the county and several hounded volunteers have expressed a wish to help.

Vincze Loránt has met with mayors, deputy mayors, local council members and activists in Nyárádszereda and Gernyeszeg, where he was accompanied by RMDSZ senator Császár Károly and Members of Parliament Csép Andrea and Vass Levente.
