Dramatic call for help from Ukraine and a new donation partner
22.04.2022"We see many families in need of humanitarian assistance, as many have lost not only their jobs but also their homes and even their loved ones. We are concerned for their safety." With this urgent appeal, one of our member organisations in Ukraine, the Mejlis of Crimean Tatar, addressed FUEN this week. At the same time, the Crimean Tatars ask for "all possible support for the citizens of Ukraine and all nationalities living on its territory".
The main efforts of the Mejlis Coordination Center in Kyiv are now focused on assisting the population which became homeless, including Crimean Tatars in Bukha and Irpen (towns nearby Kyiv, which were in the middle of hostilites in mid-March), with food, hygiene items and medicine. According to the organisations, unfortunately many people do not have any income and are in a hard situation. The Mejlis Coordination Center in Lviv is trying to help Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars who are internally displaced in western Ukraine.
The dramatic descriptions of the situation make it clear once again how urgently humanitarian aid is needed. That is why we are pleased to announce that the Ukrainian Red Cross is the new partner of FUEN`s Help, so we can help! Minorities for Ukraine humanitarian aid campaign. With its dedicated stuff and excellent ground knowledge the Ukrainian Red Cross, a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is one of the very few organisations that offers constant help to the Ukrainian citizens. This partnership guarantees that all funds collected in the Minorities for Ukraine campaign will reach their destination, the Ukrainian people in need.
FUEN was also in touch with the Greek community in Ukraine. Their president, Mrs. Alexandra Protsenko-Pichagi, who is now in Greece reported to us that part of the Greek community managed to leave Mariupol by bus and reach Greece. The city of Mariupol is now completely destroyed and there are no Greekd left there, but many of them have remained and now live in the villages around Mariupol, which are controlled by the Russian troops. The organisation of Greeks in Ukraine, with its headquarters in Mariupol, will continue to work on a restricted basis until the full liberation of the area by the Ukrainian armed forces and until the new General Assembly, according to Alexandra Protsenko-Pichagi. She is now working on opening a new office of the organization in Greece, in the city of Thessaloniki.
